Need Holiday Gift Giving Help!!?
The following is a family plan for Christmas gift giving this season. The names have been changed to protect the innocent. I just need some opinions on this matter. It’s a little long, but worth the read. Thanks!!
It starts off with an email from me to all my sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, then follows with their responses.

As just a heads up, HUSBAND and i are doing the same gift giving process that we did last year. we will be buying gifts for the children only and those that do not have children. so we ask that you all only get gifts for our children and not for HUSBAND and i.

if anyone does not want to part-take in this or has any questions, please let me know asap so that we may come to some other sort of agreement.

sounds good! i’ll tell MY HUSBAND since he’ll be doing the shopping. money is tight this year so it’ll help out! every little bit helps these days!

SIL 1 November 12 at 1:13pm
i told MY HUSBAND last night about this and he agreed. he said that he’s only buying for kids and everyone else that doesn’t have kids will only be able to get a $20 gift b/c he just doesn’t have it this year. we need to buy for our kids first! i hope that doesn’t sound selfish but they believe in santa and everything and we need to do for them first!

ME November 12 at 1:19pm
sounds good. i understand. money is tight for us too this year, even tighter now that i’m not working.

SISTER IN LAW 2 November 12 at 1:27pm
i dont understand how that way of buying stuff makes any sense………..ur saving money on what? 3 people? am i wrong?

SISTER IN LAW 3 November 12 at 2:07pm
Dearest family,
For clarification: Are we supposed to spend the same amount on each family? or per child? for example: if I want to spend a total of $15.00 per family does that mean that the people who have spawned 4 time’s children would each only get gifts that cost $3.75? While the ones who have only one child would get the entire $15.00? Also, should we be taking into account the age of said children? for example, do the children who have been around longer get a higher percentage of the allotted dollars since they have earned more of our love? Or should it work the opposite way where the amount spent per child should be based upon how much belief in Christmas the younger child possesses? Or maybe we should base it upon how much belief in "Santa" or maybe even "Jesus" (the reason for the season) the intended recipient’s heart contains? Because it hardly seems fair that the families that have less children should be penalized in the total cash value take home from the holidays… and on the flip side it hardly seems "fair" for the children in larger families to open a box containing a twinkie, while the child on the opposite couch is opening the 8 foot tall box with the live white pony….. But I mean… if we are going to get specific I would like to be REALLY specific so that I can be sure that I do not spend any more than I absolutely have to… since as someone pointed out, every penny does count.

In all seriousness though… thank you for getting an early start on the bad taste the holidays leaves in ones mouth…. I had been wondering when the festivities would commence for this year….

Totally understand, sounds good. BTW a winter celebration was celebrated LONG before Jesus, usually centered around the solstice. So lets keep Santa and Jesus out of it ;) Can we keep our opinions a bit to ourselves so this Christmas can be good. Maybe a Caribbean vacation sounds better, jeez.

ME November 12 at 2:31pm
yes, we will be saving money on 3 people. might seem insignificant to you all, but it’s not to us. we are a family of 4 and only one of us brings in any income. that little bit of money we will be saving will be going towards paying our mortgage, our electric bill, our car insurance, our phone bill…

i’m not saying you have to do the same thing. i’m just letting you know that that is what we will be doing. i’m just putting it out there for you.

SIL 2 November 12 at 2:39pm Reply
well i REALLY dont have money but i was gonna buy stuff for everyone (just like i did last year)……..perhaps my memory is off but i seem to remember people getting pissed off and upset because some people didnt "follow the rules"……Pardon me if i’m wrong but that seems like a fluke in the system.

ME November 12 at 2:40pm
there are no rules. and i guess we were at different christmases cause i remember people getting pissed about not getting anything.

ME November 12 at 2:42pm
and if you wanted to do the same thing, SIL 2, you would be saving because that’s 5 people you wouldn’t have to buy for.

SIL 3 November 12 at 2:44pm
Thanks for the history/religious lesson BROTHER IN LAW…. as well as the opinion. I am growing really tired of the selfish antics of this family…. Yes good "CHRISTmas" ind

Simple solution: Everybody buy for whom they want to. That’s the way it should be anyway. It’s not about out-doing each other NOR is it about who has spent what dollar amount. Buy for who you want to and leave it at that. If they have mental issues about it let them deal with them theirselves. Your brother in law sounds wonderful (not!) I’m sure he’s a blast for y’all to be around on Christmas. Good luck. Just keep it simple. You probably didn’t even need to announce what you guys were doing. If they want to complain at Christmas time because they didn’t get a gift or felt they got a cheap one then that shows what they really care about.

Ummm….Wow! Seems as though some adults need to grow up and realize that the holiday season is more about being together and enjoying each others company more than it is about gifts. Gifts are insignificant and I agree that if money is tight then buy just for the children or how about not at all, children should be taught that the holiday is not about "what you get" but about "Love and Happiness".

wow!! i agree with you and the first SIL and first BIL. we have a large family as well and i only by for the children and they only by for mine. i understand christmas isn’t just about gifts but it is more for children then adults in my opinion. just forget the other people and do as you were planning there’s nothing wrong with that. when you have kids money is tight not to mention lately its been extra tight for a lot of people and your children come first. as for the lady who mad the comment about 15 per family and blah blah blah. why not spend 10-15 per kid that really isn’t much at least not in my mind. this puts a whole new outlook on the whole in-law scenario..lol good luck!
